Collins Success Story

posted Jan 20, 2012 10:58 AM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated Jan 20, 2012 11:00 AM ]

Collins arrived end of July 2010 with a half jacket of fur and horrible itchy scratchy scabs all over him.   Obviously uncomfortable,   Collins simply kept wagging his tail, wagging his tail and smiling even more.   Fighting off a severe case of mange,  his chances of ever leaving the shelter alive were dim at best even going back a year ago.   Collins' story MIGHT have ended here but since we now have a more developed network of fosters and rescues,  Collins had options.    Collins immediately set up shop in foster mom,  Kim T's home where she dutifully bathed him and treated him for his severe mites. Over time,  his jacket grew in and he too grew.   He made doggy friends and stole hearts in his foster home.  Collins' ticket to ride to his rescue in PA came in November. Mid December,  he finally took his first step in his permanent home.   Above you can see Collins when he arrived,  telling Kim goodbye and then with his new family.  This is why we all do what we do.

Miss Amy's Success Story

posted Nov 16, 2011 1:50 PM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated Nov 16, 2011 1:58 PM ]

Miss Amy arrived looking tired, used and broken.  The camera let her soul shine right on through and today she is employed full time as a valued family pet in VA.

A note from her new mom Ginger:  Today is the one year anniversary of the day we met and I adopted Ms. Amy!  I just wanted you to know she is doing fantastic and is completely rotten!  She has been a huge blessing to our family, not just our immediate family, but even our extended family.  She's gotten to go to places in homes that other dogs have never even been inside of!  My grandmother was ill recently and I took Ms. Amy over when I visited.  She just sat quietly beside her and my grandmother talked for days about how it was like she knew she didn't feel well and was there to make her feel better.  One weekend, we went away and could not take her to the hotel so she stayed with my parents.  She slept in the bed with my mother!!  This has NEVER happened.  My mother brings her treats just like she does the grandchildren when she comes over.  Unreal!  :)  Just a couple of illustrations of how sweet she is and how much she means to us.

Becham's Success Story

Dear DCHS:  Enzo (formerly Becham) is such a fun loving pup and we are so blessed to have him!  When Enzo first came to live with us he was still very shy and skittish however now his true spunky personality has come out!  He just loves any attention he can get and the next best thing to having attention from one of us is playing with one of his squeaky toys!! He has been a great addition to our little family and we couldn’t image our lives without  him!   Josh, Amanda, & Ashton

Note From Enzo:   I just want to say thanks to everyone at the Darlington County Humane Society who helped take such good care of me!  You guys are great, and thanks for helping me find my forever family who loves me bunches and buys me squeaky toys!  They are the best!!    Love, Enzo Lehr

Jason's Success Story

posted Aug 12, 2011 2:53 PM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated Aug 12, 2011 3:03 PM ]

Jason was no stranger to the camera or visitors to his habitat.  This friendly, "sleek velvet" recently found his way into a poofy Laz-y Boy chair.  Below are words from his new mom:

Hi.  I just wanted to let you all know that Jason seems to be adapting very well. Our other cat Sunny is still wary, but Sally, our little American Eskimo is fine with him. He stayed under my bed except to eat and use the litter box until about midday Sat. Once he came out, he wanted to explore everything. He has gotten used to me and my son, and loves petting, but still doesn't like to be picked up. He is ready to eat at all times and is actually filling out some. Planning to take him to the vet on Friday as he still has a kind of bad sneeze every now and then. I am going to attach a picture....just wanted to let you know Jason was doing good. Thank you and may God bless you all for all you do.  Melinda R. Darlington, SC

June's Success Story

June knew she was destined for greatness.  Hopping aboard a Pilot 'N Paws flight from Darlington to Long Island back in 2009,  June had no real idea what was in store for her but was up for the challenge.  Taken in by a rescue on the Island,  June quickly endeared her sweet furry self to her new foster family and shortly thereafter received the great news that she had been accepted into their home as a full time pet.  Smile.  Smile.  Today, June shares her home with two other playmates. She keeps her trim physique by swimming year round in the ocean and then scampering in the deep winter snow.  Life is really, really good!!

Trixie's Success Story

posted May 30, 2011 7:40 AM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated May 30, 2011 7:46 AM ]

Dear Folks at the Darlington County Humane Shelter,

I just wanted to let you know how I was doing since my adoption.  I’m really having a great time and have found some folks who think that I am the cutest kitten ever.  I have a big sister cat who loves me and two dog friends that think that I am kinda cute.  (They don’t really know how to admire a kitten with all my special gifts yet)  I do admit that I have a fascination for my brother dog’s tail since it looks like a big plume, but he doesn’t seem to mind if I bat it around every once in a while.   All in all, I am so happy that you took such good care of me before my mom could find me at your shelter and bring me to my forever home.  Without you kind folks, there is no telling what would have happened to me..  Also,I  just wanted you to know that mom changed my name to Luna instead of Trixie, because she said my face reminded her of a half of a harvest moon. Anyway, bye for now and thanks again for your love and care while I lived with you! Love and Kisses, Luna

Pee Wee's Success Story

posted May 30, 2011 7:28 AM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated May 30, 2011 7:37 AM ]

Arriving long and lanky and down right skinny,  sweet, sweet Pee Wee (now Jett) was in very poor health.  He quickly caught the eye of a rescue in NY who found room for him.  While his new foster family was immediately charmed and captivated by his gentle disposition, before they had a chance to adopt him,  he was spotted by a retired couple at a PetCo adopt-a-thon and the rest is history.  Jett is now totally doted on and has almost doubled in size!!

Birmingham's Success Story

posted Oct 14, 2010 6:50 AM by Susan Blakeney

Fun, vivacious and incredibly friendly, Birmingham waited and waited for his new family to find him at the shelter. An on line donor from NYC donated money to cover all of his vetting costs and still no interest.   Birmingham's lucky call finally came after months of staying with us and off he went to a bully breed rescue in NC.  Immediately integrating into his new foster home complete with lots of other furry friends, the search was now on to find his permanant home.   It didn't take long as Birmingham "interviewed" so well and made it impossible for people to resist him.  Here is the update from the rescue group who pulled Birmingham and hooked him up with his new family:

Here's a pic of Birmingham with his new dad and mom (soon to be married).  They live in an apartment in Greensboro so Tony took Birmingham to meet the apartment manager and staff and EVERYBODY fell in love with him!!!  He was really a joy to have here and we are so happy to have been a part of finding him a real forever home.  He sure deserved a chance!  Alisa and Tony

Huck's Happy Tail

posted Aug 9, 2010 11:37 AM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated Aug 9, 2010 12:00 PM ]

Huck's lucky day came on a cold day in January 2008 when a rescue from Columbia came to take him home. Huck brought with him a heart of gold and heartworms (now gone!!) and is currently sharing his home with two other dogs and plays host to foster dogs who come filtering through his pad.  With summer in full force, Huck is loving life as he stretches his lean body to pick pears from his own personal fruit tree in the backyard.

Huck is a pampered Hound who doesn't hunt anything but pears and a soft place to sleep! LOL I'm so happy that I found him there before it was too late. I remember that the pipes had frozen the night before we drove from Columbia to see him, and the shelter was closed. I called from the driveway and begged to be let in! I told them we drove all the way from Columbia to adopt a dog, so they let us in. My rescue also pulled several other dogs right after that and adopted them out. So, a happy ending for lotsa dogs! Leona's Success Story

posted Jul 16, 2010 12:07 PM by Susan Blakeney   [ updated Jul 16, 2010 12:22 PM ]

Leona came to the shelter mid Spring (far right pic) and within days had a litter of puppies.  Tragically, none of her pups lived. Leona quickly got over her loss and spent the balance of her days reaching out to staff and volunteers with her endless smiles and tail wags.  She was with us for literally months before her rescue call would come.

Beth Leermakers, our Rescue Coordinator, shared with us her thoughts on Leona: Thank you everyone for helping Leona get to safety this past weekend.  These pictures brought a happy tear to my eyes.  Some days I need a reminder about why we all work so hard.  This was a good one ...
